The brief
Our clients desired the best of both worlds — a home that externally respects the historical character of its surroundings, yet internally embraces modern living. They envisioned a double-fronted Victorian-style mansion that would blend seamlessly into the neighborhood’s aesthetic, with interiors and landscaping designed for comfort, functionality, and contemporary flair.
Building on Green Belt land presents unique planning constraints, especially when proposing the demolition of an existing property. The key challenge was to design a new home that felt authentic to the area’s Victorian architectural language, while satisfying strict planning regulations and delivering an interior layout tailored to modern family life. Additionally, the design needed to transition gracefully from a traditional front elevation to a strikingly modern rear façade, integrating large expanses of glass without disrupting the visual harmony or privacy of the site.
KLC Architects delivered a design that merges traditional elegance with innovative architectural thinking. The front of the house is finished in smooth painted render with a Welsh slate roof — a respectful nod to period architecture. In contrast, the rear opens up with full-height glass walls that flood the interior with natural light and connect the home seamlessly to its landscaped garden. Inside, the interiors are defined by clean lines, open-plan spaces, and bespoke detailing. A standout feature is the expansive basement — designed to evolve from a garage and workshop into a state-of-the-art family cinema room, offering flexibility for future needs. This home represents a successful fusion of historic charm and contemporary innovation, tailored to the client’s vision and the unique character of the site.
