The brief
The Ground and Lower Ground floor was formally a Dental Practice and an application for change of use to residential was approved. The Lower Ground floor at the back of the house were small and dark and the developers wanted to explore extending the property to include a basement which needed to be comprehensively excavated to make a spacious kitchen to sell to the market.
The challenge
Transforming a small, dark lower ground floor of a former dental practice into a spacious, light-filled residential basement required comprehensive excavation, structural rebuilding, and securing planning permission for an extended basement with lightwells in a constrained urban site.
The outcome
Working with our team of expert engineers we effectively designed and rebuilt the flat from the inside out. To make the house safe, all supporting walls were structurally rebuilt and underpinned. Using specialist contractors and traditional materials the dining, kitchen and utility rooms were connected together to create one magnificent light-filled space. KLC Architects were successful in persuading the council planners to grant permission for a fully extended basement with lightwells at the front and at the back of house creating an incredible contemporary design statement and flooded the house with light.

St Georges Road, Lambeth and Castle, London
The project involved converting and extending the lower ground floor of a London property by excavating a new basement to create a large, open-plan kitchen and dining area. Structural underpinning and rebuilding were carried out to ensure safety, while lightwells were introduced to flood the space with natural light, resulting in a contemporary, inviting living area.
