The brief
KLC Architects were commissioned to provide concept feasibility drawings for a client’s newly acquired plot in the prestigious Muthaiga Estate, Nairobi. The vision: a grand Neo-classical Victorian mansion, rooted in timeless elegance and international design standards. The property was to reflect both opulence and functionality, incorporating luxurious living spaces while accommodating the practical needs of the residents and their guests. The proposed development was to include 5 ensuite bedrooms, 4 reception rooms, staff quarters, and a separate guest wing — all set within 0.6 acres of landscaped, south-facing grounds.
Designing a project of this scale and classical style within East Africa posed several key challenges. Balancing the architectural integrity of a Victorian aesthetic with local building regulations, climate considerations, and material availability required both creative and technical problem-solving. Additionally, ensuring seamless integration of modern amenities such as lift access, expansive circulation spaces, and sustainable construction methods — all within a residential setting — required thoughtful design coordination from concept through to development. As this was KLC Architects’ first international residential project in the region, managing cross-border client collaboration and on-site development logistics also presented new dynamics.
The result is a magnificent, two-storey mansion built from locally sourced Tanzanyika limestone and finished with a classic clay-tiled roof. A dramatic portico entrance with stone pediment detailing sets the tone, leading into interiors defined by a sweeping curved staircase, accessible via lift, and richly appointed formal and informal living areas. Each bedroom suite is designed for privacy and comfort, with dedicated quarters for guests and staff subtly integrated into the overall plan. Currently in development, the Muthaiga Residence marks KLC Architects’ successful entry into the international arena — a testament to their ability to blend classical design with contemporary expectations, tailored to unique cultural and environmental contexts.
