The brief
The clients wanted to maximise the living space within the existing footprint while introducing more natural light and modern functionality. Their goal was to create an open-plan living area that connects seamlessly to the garden, alongside practical and comfortable bedrooms for their family, including a guest suite.
The main challenge was to sensitively extend and renovate a traditional Victorian home, balancing the need for increased space and light with the character and constraints of the existing building. Converting a previously unused attic into a functional bedroom with an en-suite also required clever design solutions, as did transforming a dark study into a bright, inviting room for their child.
The ground floor underwent a dramatic transformation with rear and side extensions, incorporating a roof light and large glazed doors to flood the new open-plan kitchen, living, and dining area with natural light. Sliding pocket doors connect this space to a playroom, creating an uninterrupted flow from front to garden. A central lantern rooflight above the staircase enhances light throughout the home. The attic was transformed into a guest bedroom with an en-suite, thanks to a dormer extension and roof lights, providing a bright and private retreat. On the second floor, three children’s bedrooms were created, including a previously dark study converted into a bright and airy room with fitted wardrobes and fresh white walls, perfectly tailored to the family’s needs.
