The brief
The kitchen and utility rooms at the back of the house were small and dark. The client wanted to extend their property by adding a basement playroom for their children, which required comprehensive excavation. The house’s location within the Hammersmith Conservation Area meant that any external changes faced stringent planning restrictions.
The challenge
Excavating and constructing a spacious basement in a property located in a conservation area presented major challenges. Strict planning rules limited external alterations, so light had to be brought in through carefully designed lightwells. The structural integrity of the house needed to be maintained, requiring underpinning and rebuilding of supporting walls. Balancing modern design ambitions with heritage preservation demanded close coordination with engineers, specialist contractors, and local planning authorities.
The outcome
Working alongside expert engineers, KLC Architects redesigned and rebuilt the house from the inside out, structurally underpinning and reinforcing all supporting walls. The kitchen, utility, and dining areas were combined into a bright, open-plan space using traditional materials and craftsmanship. KLC successfully secured planning approval for a fully extended basement with lightwells at the front and rear, flooding the home with natural light and creating a striking contemporary design within the historic setting.
